Lets face it, most of us have one too many mince pies and not enough exercise over the Christmas period, Virya Technologies are encouraging our staff to make 2012 their healthiest yet with their 2012 pedometer challenge.
Each member of staff can join in and using an application on their phone, gaming device or a traditional pedometer, will monitor how many steps they take each day. For some members of staff the light-hearted competitiveness of the challenge has spurred them on to get more active, as Director Ruth Cheesley explains:
When we started the challenge I thought I would do OK but it made me realise just how little I walk nowadays - I seem to spend most of the time at the computer screen! Being beaten hands down by Chris, our apprentice, each day gave me the drive to walk a bit more. I now try to get out for a walk most lunchtimes and am trying to be more active at home - I may also walk to work during the week to get my steps up! It also helps with cutting down our carbon footprint having staff walk or cycle to work rather than drive.
I'm really keen to promote healthy lifestyles within Virya Technologies - we won the Healthy Ambitions Suffolk Small Business Award and Suffolk Carbon Charter Bronze Award last year which demonstrates our commitment to maintaining a healthy and sustainable workforce, and we hope to build on the work we've done so far as our company expands.
