Virya Technologies have been working closely with another Suffolk company to modernise the public-facing image of an important Suffolk-based charity, Suffolk Historic Churches Trust (SHCT).

Virya Technologies designed the new content management system (CMS) website based on the open source Joomla! CMS, while Rachel Sloane from Rachel Sloane Partnerships Ltd. wrote and devised the content for the site.

A key aspect of this project was to ensure that the site was easily maintained by "non-techie" people on a regular basis - from uploading photographs to adding content and managing an event calendar.

Ruth Cheesley, Director of Virya Technologies, explains why Joomla! was a perfect choice for this project:

The brief for this project required an easily maintained site which allowed the committee to be able to have full control over their own site, without incurring fees each time they wished to update or change an aspect of the site.

When we considered the needs of the charity it was clear that there were some immediate requirements - such as a photo gallery, web-based enquiry forms, an events calendar and informative articles - and some which may be "future" developments - such as being able to manage online subscriptions for memberships and fully running the charity's main fundraising event - the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust Annual Bike Ride - via the website rather than with paper-based forms.

The beauty of content management systems such as Joomla! is that extra features like this can be easily "bolted on" at any point in the future, and do not require extensive re-coding of the site.  Also, having the facility to assign strict security permissions to certain users which allow for varying levels of access to the site means that SHCT can train people to various levels - for example full administrator, editor, publisher and so forth - ensuring they had control over "proof reading" any articles that had been submitted by others in the team.

We really enjoyed working with Rachel Sloane Partnerships Ltd. on this project and are thrilled to see the impact it is having on the work of the Trust.

Robert Rous, Chairman of Suffolk Historic Churches Trust, was very pleased with the performance of the website, with extended analytics features demonstrating interest coming from around the world, many more enquiries about becoming a "friend", and a more modern appearance since the redesign went live.
