Do you have a Joomla! 1.5.x website that needs upgrading to 1.7.x?

This tutorial will show you how, step by step.

Before attempting to upgrade, you should always take a backup of your site. Akeeba backup is great for this, as it allows you to backup to the cloud, download, or store the backup on your server.

You can get akeeba backup here: https://www.akeebabackup.com/download/akeeba-backup.html

This will install like any component you've installed before, through the Extensions menu, then Install/Uninstall. Once this is installed, configure it using either the configuration wizard, or the manual configuration option, then hit the backup now button.

Once the backup is complete, we can begin to upgrade.

You'll need a component called jupgrade. This will update your core Joomla files to the latest version (As of writing this, 1.7.0). You can get jupgrade here: http://www.matware.com.ar/downloads/joomla/jupgrade.html

Install this in exactly the same way as you did with the akeeba backup file. The jupgrade option should now appear in the Components menu, click this to take you to the upgrade page.

Above the big green "Start Upgrade" button, you may see a line of text stating that "Mootools 1.2 not loaded", if not, skip to the next paragraph. If this is the case, click the text displayed and it will take you to the Components manager. Type in the search bar "System – Mootools Upgrade" and you should be presented with a single component. Click on the red X icon about halfway along to enable it, then return to the jupgrade menu with the big green button.

Click on the big green "Start Upgrade" button, and jupgrade will begin to upgrade your Joomla! Website automatically.

If all goes well, you should be presented with this.

It says here that your site has been upgraded to Joomal! 1.6.x, but in fact, it's been upgraded to 1.7.x.

Click either link to be taken to your new, 1.7.x Joomla! Website, or the Admin panel.

If anything during the upgrade did not go to plan, you can simply restore the backup you made using akeeba backup, and try again!

When you say you moved it, how did you do this? What I normally suggest is firstly to copy everything except your /jupgrade folder into a directory called /oldfiles or something similar - so you have the entire site there if you need to revert back.

It's generally quicker to do this at command line (if you know what you're doing) or via CPanel/Plesk than via FTP.

Once you've done this, go into /jupgrade and move everything into the root. REMEMBER you will need to
    - change the tmp and log paths in configuration.php
    - re-run Akeeba wizard for Akeeba Backup or amend the backup location if this has changed
    - Amend RewriteBase if you were using SEF URL's when in /jupgrade (comment out the line in .htaccess - if you don't know what I am talking about ignore this part).

If it still does not work,

    - clear your browser cache, try in another browser
    - right click, view source, and check you didn't hard-code paths to CSS files (a common error) or images.
    - Make absolutely sure you moved all your files!

    I hope this helps.

    hi,
i followed the same steps and all seemed fine.
i then clicked the link to my new admin site and tried to enter my user name and password - but my access was denied on claims that "Username and password do not match or you do not have an account yet." - how can this be?

George: When you upgrade it 'copies' your site and upgrades it in /jupgrade so as not to over-write your existing site.

Dan: Go to options, you can normally choose which version to upgrade to but I'd suggest going to 2.5.

Muhammad: Have you read the information above? Make sure that you have met the criteria above - namely you are at the most recent version in 1.5 (1.5.25), have the MooTools plugin enabled and at the top of the list of system plugins, and make sure that there are no javascript conflicts (open up error console in Firefox).

I'm looking to upgrade a 1.5.25 to 1.7 but I only see an upgrade tool for upgrading to 2.5. Is the download still available for upgrading to 1.7?

My site is at mysite.com but the administration is at mysite.com/jupgrade/administrator? Why is that?
